Indian classical music comprises of two major forms / genres of Indian classical music:
(1) The carnatic music
(2) Hindustani music.
Carnatic music, also known as "Karnaṭaka sangeetham," is a highly structured system of music in South India - which includes the Indian states of Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana. Carnatic music evolved from ancient Indian scriptures and traditions. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music to sing written-compositions (poems). The music is also performed on instruments such as the veena, flute and violin in singing style.
Carnatic vocal music lessons typically begin with an instroduction to the Swaras (notes) and their variations, which are important for understanding the intricate melodies. The beginner's Carnatic Music Lessons also cover the basic scales (ragas), rhythm patterns (talas), and the concept of tala cycles.
1. Swarasthanas: Students learn the placement of each note within the octave and practice vocal exercises to enhance their pitch accuracy and tonal quality.
2. Sarali Varisai: A set of simple and sequential exercises that help develop voice modulation and control.
3. Alankaras: Melodic patterns that involve intricate combinations of Swaras, aiding in finger dexterity and vocal agility.
4. Geethams: Short and melodious compositions that serve as a bridge between exercises and more complex compositions.
5. Swarajatis: Longer rhythmic compositions that introduce students to intricate tala patterns and improvisation.
As students progress through their Carnatic vocal music lessons, they move on to more advanced concepts that require a deeper understanding of the art form such as Raga Alapana, Neraval, Kalpana Swarams and more.
